I’ve often wondered if we would appreciate the sun if it didn’t rain; or peace if there weren’t conflict or light if there weren’t darkness. Maybe some of the lessons we are supposed to learn in the school of life come from those contrasts. Perhaps, like Paul, we need to be so secure in God’s love that we can “Be cheerful no matter what; pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens….” Ist Thess. 5:18

I like the way this old hymn says it.

God hath not promised
Skies always blue
Flower -strewn pathways
All our lives through
God hath not promised
Sun without rain
Joy without sorrow
Peace without pain
But God hath promised
Strength for the day
Rest for the labor
Light for the way
Grace for the trials
Help from above
Unfailing sympathy
Undying Love
